Enable Or Disable Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) In Windows 10

The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) can be used to troubleshoot common issues of unbootable Windows 10 operating system. With the help of WinRE, one can restore Windows 10 OS to a previous date, perform disk check, repair the boot manager, and system file check, go back to the previous version of Windows 10, reset/repair Windows 10 install, and resolve startup issues.

There are multiple ways to access the Windows Recovery Environment on a computer running Windows 10. When Windows 10 fails to boot and restart two times, the Windows Recovery Environment will show up on the screen automatically. WinRE is preloaded into the Windows 10 Home, Pro, Education and Enterprise editions.

The Windows Recovery Environment is enabled by default in Windows 10. You can check the status of WinRE and enable or disable the same via the Command Prompt.

Here is how to check the status of WinRE and enable or disable the Windows Recovery Environment in Windows 10 via Command Prompt. You can also use this method to fix the “Could not find the recovery environment” error in Windows 10.

Enable or disable WinRE in Windows 10

Step 1: The first step is to launch the elevated Command Prompt. To do that, type CMD in the Start/taskbar search, right-click on the Command Prompt result, and then click Run as administrator option.

Click the Yes button when you get the User Account Control screen to open the Command Prompt with administrative privileges.

Step 2: At the Command Prompt, execute the following command to check whether the Windows Recovery Environment is enabled or disabled on your PC.

reagentc /info

Step 3: Next, execute the following command to enable or disable the Windows Recovery Environment.

reagentc /disable

Use the above command to disable WinRE.

reagentc /enable

Use the above command to enable WinRE.

You will get the “Operation Successful” message once the WinRE is enabled or disabled.

Note that we don’t recommend disabling the Windows Recovery Environment.
