DOOM and DOOM II Update Adds 60 FPS Support, Quick Save, Curated Add-Ons

Bethesda is trying to modernize some of the older DOOM games, so a major update is coming to the first two titles, which includes important improvements and new features. Besides the new changes, both DOOM and DOOM II games now feature support for add-ons, which means that players can download WADs for free.

For the first time since their launch, DOOM and DOOM II feature support for native 60 FPS on all platforms, up from the original games’ 35 FPS. Also, players will be able to take advantage of another important new feature, Quick Save. While paused in DOOM or DOOM II, players can simply press R/R1/RB to save their current position. To load a quick save, simply pause the game and press L/L1.LB.

A lot of quality-of-life adjustments have been implemented too, including a Quick Weapon Select feature, improved Level Select function, added Aspect Ratio and Brightness options, a new split-screen HUD and more.

As mentioned earlier, curated add-ons can now be downloaded for free from the main menu for both DOOM and DOOM II. Bethesda revealed it will launch an initial batch of add-ons, but more will be released in the future after asking for suggestions from players on the best WADs to include next.

Also, enemies in the Wolfenstein level have been restored to the original DOS release, which means that the original textures and enemy audio have been re-added to the level, but with censored references removed.

Lots of issues have been fixed, many of these dating from the original DOS release. For example, an issue where map objects would not correctly track the player after loading a saved game has been addressed, which also fixes an occasional crash with loading a save game with an active BFG projectile.

The update for DOOM and DOOM II is now available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS and PC. Make sure to check the full list of changes included in the update if you want to know more.
